The first water from a new well.

John Soderberg and Andrea Schuman of the Sister City Project Executive Committee have introduced a cheap, elegant low-tech water quality screening and purification system to three isolated rural communities in the San Juan del Sur municipal district--Pochote, Monte Cristo and San Antonio de Ostional. The communities have simple but effective incubators for testing bacterial levels in water, and a sand-and-gravel filtration system that removes bacteria, viruses and parasites from even the most contaminated water. Trained community members keep this system functioning without the help of "outside experts" and become the transmitters of the technology to neighboring communities. For more information about this project, contact John and Andrea at CTripleS@aol.com.
