John Soderberg and Andrea Schuman of the Sister City Project Executive
Committee have introduced a cheap, elegant low-tech water quality
screening and purification system to three isolated rural communities in
the San Juan del Sur municipal district--Pochote, Monte Cristo and San
Antonio de Ostional. The communities have simple but effective
incubators for testing bacterial levels in water, and a sand-and-gravel
filtration system that removes bacteria, viruses and parasites from even
the most contaminated water. Trained community members keep this system
functioning without the help of "outside experts" and become the
transmitters of the technology to neighboring communities. For more
